Controlling the communications between WLAN clients (until LCOS 10.00)

Description:

The configurations of LANCOM WLAN routers, access points and WLAN controllers include a number of options to control the communications between WLAN clients.

Requirements:
  • LCOS until Version 10.00
  • LANtools until Version 10.00

Procedures:

1) In the configurations on access points or WLAN routers (no WLAN controller in use, until LCOS 10.00):

1.1) Option “Allow traffic between stations of this SSID”:

This option is enabled by default in the settings for each SSID. It allows communications to take place between all of the WLAN clients that are connected to the SSID.

With this option disabled, it is possible to prevent communication between WLAN clients that are on this SSID and associated with this access point. However, clients that are in the same SSID but associated with a different access point can still communicate with one another. The options described in step 1.2 prevent this.

1.2) Options under “Data traffic between SSIDs and stations”:

The three options here allow you to enable or disable communications between WLAN clients within a WLAN and also between different access points. Until LCOS 10.00 it is only possible to configure this universally.

2) In the configuration of a WLAN controller (all LCOS versions):

2.1) Option “Allow traffic between stations of this SSID”:

The option to Allow traffic between stations of this SSID in the WLAN controller in located in the profile configuration of the respective SSIDs in the menu WLAN controller -> Profiles -> Logical WLAN networks (SSIDs).
  • The option to Allow traffic between stations of this SSID, in the case of the settings for the LAN on the AP itself, means that the communication between WLAN clients that are connected to this SSID can be allowed or prevented (i.e. the same functionality as defined in item 1.1).
  • If the option Connect SSID to is set to a WLC tunnel, the option to Allow traffic between stations of this SSID additionally allows the communications within the SSID to be allowed or prevented even between different access points.

Even in a WLC scenario, it is not possible to universally allow communications between WLAN clients in one or more SSID(s) and at the same time to prevent communications in one or more different SSID(s).
